They were also clear that they wanted to partner with disadvantaged makers in Northern India with whom they could co-design their collection in order to meld traditional techniques and textiles to a modern aesthetic. These makers are practicing art forms that have been passed down for generations. Everything is made as simply and sustainably as possible, either by hand or on traditional looms that require no electricity. Even the dyes are natural and environmentally friendly. By partnering with these makers, Sustainable Threads is able to fulfill its goal of offering fair wages, safe working environments, and a boost of self-esteem for these often marginalized people. Currently they work with approximately 100 makers, but Poonam and Harish want to continue to seek out more makers so that they can expand their product offerings, and help more artisans improve their financial standing.
